MELANIE SCHAUWECKER

Feet rooted in the Earth
Snaking down into the core of Mother Gaia

Crown rising to the Heavens
Opening to the light of Father Sky

Where these energies meet and merge
Is in the core of the Heart

Deep within the void of this space,

In the dark womb of the Heart

A tiny bud of light opens and swells
Bursting forth with radiant rays

A blossom of sunlight
Powerful, shining, expanding

As a lifelong performing artist who fell in love with the healing arts along the way, my journey began at a relatively young age, when I dove into the world of musical theatre, drama classes, and theatre games. My passion for acting grew throughout my teen years, in high school where there was a thriving and active drama community.

While at university, I discovered the world of devised and experimental performance, creating pieces from poetry, imagery, and ensemble improvisation. This sparked a lasting fascination with the intuitive and imaginative aspects of creating performances, and I found myself continually drawn to more non-traditional forms of theatre.

As a young adult, I moved to France to study physical theatre - a form that deepened my connection to embodied expression. One summer, while attending an arts festival in Ireland, I joined a sunrise Qi Gong circle in a grassy field, surrounding by rolling green hills, with horses grazing nearby. I was immediately entranced by this practice, which took place in nature, and discovered that France is a haven for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), of which Qi Gong is one branch.

Returning to the U.S., I immersed myself in TCM, studying acupressure, Tui Na, Reiki, intuitive bodywork, and working at a TCM fertility clinic. There, I was introduced to practices like Chi Nei Tsang (abdominal massage), moxibustion, healing sounds, and energetic nutrition - tools that deepened my ability to care for and understand my own body.
Some years later, I embarked on the study of Classical Feng Shui, aware of how I always seemed to be affected by the spaces around me. I felt the importance of creating curated and welcoming spaces that help regulate our nervous systems and please the senses, something that directly translates into the theatrical and performance arena. This training also opened me to the energetic dialogue between humans and land. It was here that I met a teacher who introduced me to a practice of listening and connecting with the land.

I trained with this mentor in a meditative, imaginal technique that allowed me to tap into conversation with the land. During these practices, I began to notice that even simple physical movement such as a sway, a breath, a roll of the neck, amplified the visions and sensations I experienced. Over time, this evolved into a full-body, vocalized meditative experience: a kind of living channel between earth, body, and spirit.

In my late thirties I returned to school to study physical theatre more deeply. This chapter grounded my vision and gave me tools to create with clarity and confidence. In recent years, my interest in performance has shifted more into creating held spaces where expression, presence, and connection can blossom in organic, sacred ways.

Currently, my work is rooted in both solo and collaborative experiences that support reconnection with our own embodied wisdom - through energy work sessions, nature-based circles, and performance pieces that serve as activations. I feel a growing call toward the power of women gathering: in circle, barefoot and hand-in-hand, guided by sound and movement, deepening our creative expression and our connection with one another, with Mother Earth, and with All That Is, experiencing joy, feeling whole, and at peace.
